About the Presenter: Barry Zuckerman, M.D. is the Joel and Barbara Alpert Professor of Pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine and Chief of Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Zuckerman has been a national leader in expanding pediatric health care to more effectively address the needs of children, especially low income and minority children. He has done this primarily through a process of connecting and providing additional services in the pediatric setting to promote children’s health, development, and well-being. His efforts are highlighted in three special initiatives that due to their effectiveness have been disseminated nationally. For almost two decades, through the Reach Out and Read Program, which he and colleagues started, pediatricians have gone beyond traditional medicine and reached out to give parents information on how to read to children at different ages. Along with this advice, the doctor gives the child a developmentally and culturally appropriate book to take home so that parents can read aloud to promote the child’s enjoyment of books and their development. Published research evaluating the impact of this effort have been remarkably positive and consistent; low-income parents are more likely to read to their children and their children’s language scores, which are precursors of literacy, increased significantly on vocabulary tests. Reach Out and Read is in over 2700 practices and clinics around the U.S. reaching more than 2.5 million children with 3.5 million books.
